“It was an amazing experience to work with Rafael and Zahorí to provide the final look to the image. Rafael understood perfectly what was in my mind and was very respectful of the work of the director of photography. He managed to accomplish the dark tone we required, so the film we could be frame into the black film genre. Rafael is a wide-ranging professional, with the best disposition to achieve the desired results.”
“In my experience as a producer of the documentary POISONED KUYUJANI, directed by Alexandra Henao, working with Rafael Lacau was vitally important. His fine work provided the documentary with the tones it required. I must highlight that all the work was done at a distance since we are in different countries. The workflow was efficient and assertive.”

“To enter Rafael Lacau’s work place, is also to enter a space of critical reflection and dialogue. It’s not only the project that one brings under the arm: it is also a space for reflection and debate on cinema, its current dynamics, tendencies, aesthetics... in short, working with Lacau is not only a mere technical experience, it is also an aesthetic review and joint analysis of different opinions and perspectives, an exchange of questions asked and answers.”

“I have had the pleasure of working with Rafael Lacau in some of my projects. What I liked most about the collaboration has been the workflow that was built during work. That flow is not technical or automatic, on the contrary, it was loaded of many activities: meetings, tests, conceptual and ambient discussions. A combination of art and techniques.”

“Lacau, is the last professional to work on the cinematographic image. He is extremely thorough with the material taking part in the process even before filming has begun; during preproduction. Rafael works the projects with heart and soul, posing questions and proposals.”

The story of the film The Oldies, links various types of materials, textures and quality of materials, made for the different periods of filming. There was one in particular that defined the photography of the film, so the challenge in color was to integrate the other materials, position them and create a unit - contrasts towards black, the presence of green, brightness and color purity in the planes. The task of coloring was performed as would an artist-painter; through a comprehensive and exhaustive process that exceeded the limitations of time, the unit was driven towards the aesthetics of feelings, to remove noise, to achieve visual sound and fidelity, a goal that Rafael wholly and successfully accomplished.

"Rafael does an amazing job. He gets involved with the material, leaving his imprint of passion. The color in cinema has the ability to tell parallel stories, creating emotional atmospheres, transporting us to other periods. Rafael studies the story, making each plane a tale of many Stories in colors. Working with him was wonderful, I lived in Boston and the workflow we had at a distance was very effective. The film was selected to take part in a major film festival and everyone commented on the wonderful color work of the film"

“Working at Rafael's workstation is like diving into an essential space of creation. His sensitivity and dedication to place himself on the dramaturgy of history creates new perspectives to re-discover the material and build senses that were not there before, through a delicate handling of the tools of light and color. His disposition to approach each project according to his nature and exciting sense of team collaboration were, for me, key values of his professional support.”
